MaySaleOne of the artists Moby keeps an eye out for, Juan2.0, is having a sketch sale for the month of May, and so of course I asked for a sketch of Grips.

I really liked this one immediately, and even more at second glance. I don’t know if he was familiar with the character, or just took the time to look into him; but this piece really captures the essence of Grips…he doesn’t avoid the fight, he wants it…to be as bloody as possible. That sure is one heck of a psychotic battle-lovin’ smile, eh? I love that little detail, it really makes the piece.

300px-Warblade_Endangered_Species_Vol_1_2Today’s post is a nice splash page by penciler Scott Clark and inker Sal Regla. This one comes from Warblade: Endangered Species # 2, page 8. This is a very nice example of the kind of art being pumped out of the various studios over at Image Comics for a long time.

What is noticeable right away is the strict style of inking. I knew that this was a page from an Image book as soon as I saw the inking style. It seemed like nearly all the artists coming up through the ranks over there had that same look to their work. The style alone was such a dead giveaway that I had some idea of what the collectability of the piece was right off the bat.

It is, of course, 11×17 on Image Comics board. Continue reading »

A huge thanks to James Lynch of Hero Universe Comics for sharing this nice scan of Bombshell with us. You can click on the picture for a much larger version.

There is also a great 5 page ‘Making Of’ at the end Bombshell #1 where writer/creator James Lynch explains how the comic came to be. It’s a very informative write-up, covering costume development, publishing, and finding artist Santiago Espina.

Bombshell #1 has been selected as Moby’s inaugural Digital Pick for FCBD. You can download issue #1 free here, and please be sure to have a look at the Kickstarter as well.

BombshellWell, the annual Free Comic Book Day is upon us once again, and I’ve got a suggestion for a free comic for you! In case you have never heard of FCBD, here’s the scoop:

Free Comic Book Day is a single day – the first Saturday in May each year – when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely FREE* to anyone who comes into their stores.

I’ve chosen Hero Universe Comics Bombshell #1 to be Moby’s inaugural Digital Pick for FCBD. There are three issues in the series, and you can get the first one for free right hereThere are so many indie comics out nowadays, and many of them are noteworthy, but I wanted to pick something from the crowd that most readers would enjoy.

If you collect comics you have probably imagined what it would be like to wake up and have a superpowers, eh? Then what? You have these superpowers, but how do you become a superhero? That’s sort of the premise behind Bombshell.

This pick is in honor of the Bombshell #1 Convention Exclusive Edition Kickstarter going on right now; more info on that is at the bottom of this post. Continue reading »

Edge1One day while browsing on eBay, you can imagine my surprise when I recognized a name on some art for sale; that name was Gary Shipman. He had several mixed media illustrations for sale, all made with an interesting style to them. Something he called ‘Outsider Art’.

The reason I recognized the name was because I like to collect original artwork from artists who worked for Silverwolf and Greater Mercury Comics, a small company (and it’s reincarnation) that was around in the late 80’s and into the 90’s. Gary Shipman was the co-creator and artist for one of the major characters at Silverwolf, a character named Edge. And there he was on eBay. Continue reading »
