IdrisI’ve had this idea for a while now, but with the revelations in the Sony emails about the possibility of a black man, Idris Elba, being considered to play the role and the controversy surrounding the idea…I have a few thoughts.

Again, nothing new. My idea is a bit simple and came from, of all places, Star Wars. Disney’s plans for the Star Wars franchise include one-shot movies in between the main movies of the series featuring things like space fighter pilots.

So I got to thinking one day of all those actors who are considered by many to be the ideal James Bond but will never get the role. What if they did?

Nice concept, but of course the next question is…how? Well, the idea of having different actors playing a certain role is nothing new.  We’ve had many bonds, a couple of Jason Bournes, a new Mad Max, and even an all new Original Trek crew. In all probability a new actor stepping in to play the role of Indiana Jones is only a few years away. So….

007What if Sony keeps making Bond movies the same as they have always done but ALSO make stand-alone Bond flicks, one-offs, starring other actors as Bond?

These could be released in the off years, in between the official movies like Disney is planning with Star Wars. They would be sort of semi-official or non-canon Bond movies that let everyone (including Sony) have their cake and eat it too.

With new Bond movies only coming out every 3 years or so, there is plenty of time to release these one-offs.

Imagine if Clive Owen got to play bond, if even for only one movie. Or Liam Neeson playing a Bond coming out of retirement? Would it be so different from his roles in Taken or Unknown? And of course Idris Elbe could be Bond and everyone is happy.

Just imagine how cool it would be to see a bunch of actors get a shot at being Bond, eh?
