ReplayPostHave you ever read a book and wished they would make it into a movie? Of course; we’ve all had that moment, and I can think of a lot of books I’d like to see personally.

Most of the books I’d love to see made into movies are sci-fi and will likely never see the light of day. Hollywood simply has no stomach for taking risks when their whole business model is predicated on blockbusters that need to open to tens of millions of dollars and make their budget back in a few weeks. You see it today with all the remakes and reboots.

Replay, however, has had a screenplay floating around for a couple decades and has even had Ben Affleck attached at one point, so it seems like a good candidate to get made someday. The players on HSX seem to agree, they are holding this long by a 3:1 margin.

The story follows Jeff Winston, who dies of a heart attack at 43 and finds himself re-living his life over and over again. He wakes up as a teen and lives until he’s in he’s 43 again…then dies and comes back….and dies again…you get the picture. It’s sort of like Groundhog Day, but more like Groundhog Life.

The latest news was from Oct. ’12, a column on the website The Wrap reports that Affleck is still interested in the project, depending on a successful rewrite of the script by Greg Berlanti who is slated at this point to direct as well.

affleck1There is a script that I’m interested in that’s being written, but I don’t have any commitment to it.”

– Ben Affleck

I usually read sci-fi, fantasy, maybe some light mystery now and then. And I stay away from horror…just not into it. The recent ‘Zombies and Vampires’ stuff is really starting to get old. So much of it…but anyways, Replay hooked me with it’s premise, the whole concept of living your life over again, even though I’m not usually into reading dramas and thrillers.  It was one of those books you remember years later, title and all, just too good to forget.

Like most things I write about on this blog, it is hard to discuss without giving away spoilers, and I don’t want to do that. So yeah, stuff happens.

If you read one book this year, this one would be as good as any other, and better than most. I just hope the movie gets made.

Replay was first published in 1987. It won the 1988 World Fantasy Award for Best Novel.
