Some great news has come out for fans of the Hollywood Mogul franchise. Carey DeVuono (aka hmdesigner), creator and writer of the HM game series, has announced the Hollywood Mogul 4 Kickstarter campaign is underway!

Fans of the series had posted messages from time to time, including yours truly, imploring Carey to consider options to improve and update the game in a fourth version to no avail. But all that changed when board user shoe1985 started a new thread, declaring “I believe it is time to discuss a 4th game in the series.” On July 2, 2012 , hmdesigner posted:

Okay, okay. HM4 it is.”

What is Hollywood Mogul? Hollywood Mogul is a text-based Business Simulation that puts you in charge of a major Hollywood movie studio,  choosing which projects to develop, who will star in and produce your new movie, and everything else…right down to the budget and how many screens to release the final cut on. Moby has no figures of sales, downloads, or such, but the fact is that the franchise has been well received throughout the years and without doubt can be called successful. The very talk of another installment is proof of the enduring fan-base this independently produced game franchise has built over the years.

hm4aMoby got on board during HM2. There were not a lot of games like it, and of those none as good. Sure, it was not for everyone. It was text based, without all of the cool new graphics that seemed to be pushing actual game-play out the window. Was it perfect? No. But it was free to try the complete game, so you knew that you were getting a great game before you paid. And when HM3 was released, Moby was one of the first to download. It was a definite improvement over HM2, but again imperfect. But imperfect compared to what? Have you played Stronghold 3? I am gonna pick on it for a bit.

Stronghold 3 was a joke. A typical PC game that had less game-play but better graphics than it’s predecessor, and was so full of bugs it was unplayable. Oh, and it was like $60. And multiplayer did not work. The point is most new games are not any better than their previous versions. Call of Duty, Medal of Honor (a joke), Stronghold, etc, etc might look better with each version, but the game-play gets worse and worse.

This will not happen with HM4. For one, the support from hmdesigner has ALWAYS been there over the years. And he is LISTENING to his customers. The series has gotten better with each version, and looking at the wish list of ideas coming from the message boards, this one is sure to improve over HM3 as well. A good example of this player-oriented development can be seen in the two expansion packs that Carey is already planning. One is for a much wanted TV-Show variant to the movie only game, and another will add more to the business side, an expansion pack called ‘Suits’.

For years fans of the game have been telling me there isn’t a good TV simulation out there. For years fans have been asking me to add this to the game. I’m going to create an Expansion Pack for Hollywood Mogul 4 that will add the ability for you to make your own TV Shows in the game.”

Please go to the HM4 Kickstater page and have a look at the project. Many of the reward tiers will allow you to be added to the game as an actor, producer, etc. or to add your own scripts to the main database. Your movie idea could be incorporated directly into the game! I will add more posts later about these rewards, but you can check them out for yourself by visiting the links below.

Note: Moby is not affiliated with HM3 or 4, and does not get paid for the ad [it was put it there unsolicited, and is blogging about this news solely because Moby is a fan of the game. Imagine that.

Update: The kickstarter campaign has failed to reach it’s funding goal. My reaction HERE.

  1. I know this is old, and I love the Hollywood mogul games, but you seem to have an attitude of “90% of aaa games after a certain year suck” I know it’s just your opinion but this is just an attitude that I’ve seen so many people have just to fit in so to speak
